In this day and age everyone has access to AI in their pocket, it was framed as a great advancement. I feel as if it's truly not. The course of history has been irreversibly ruined because capital has decided everyone should have a tool to wastefully spend tokens, energy, time, fuel and resources just to have their dog get a hat in a silly photo that they could have edited themselves. Complete nonsense.
We wasted the generation of "everyone should be able to code" as nothing was made. we all use the same legacy systems that are horrid. I don't want to be some supremacist saying only clever people should have access to these tools but not everyone should have access to stupid things and only the people that want to seek it out should. I think this is one of the reasons that we have too many overconfident people, the Dunning-Kruger effect may be contested if it's real or not but we absolutely have a bunch of people who are now confident they are experts on topics because a free tier ChatGPT model agreed with them on something.
It sucks because there are a lot of bright people out there who aren't confident because they aren't the type of person to speak up on a topic unless they are sure of something, the silver tongued salesperson will always have a leg up on the person who has a real product they worked hard to create. I know there are certainly opportunities being created from AI that the second group can use but I am sure that the abundance of free and easy to use AI chatbots is just creating more people in the first group. I don’t entirely blame some people given that If you are in a poorer economic position you are kind of required to have a ‘side hustle’ but it does pain me to see yet another vibe coded ffmpeg wrapper being shown as someone “creating” something.
I just want to live in a society where people do what they are good at, I don’t believe in innate skills (other than stuff like sport or manual labour which genetics is a factor) but we have to let the people who are good at certain stuff do that stuff whilst allowing people to learn in a sensible way. There is no soul in having a LLM doing everything for you as some stuff you don’t have to do. We will all die not being the expert in everything. And that’s OK.
