Just straight up great, I had doubts that it wouldn't be that amazing and the catacombs thing would just be a gimmick but they delivered. Although it is only 29 minutes long with 5 tracks and an outro it is so worth watching/listening to and I have had it on repeat all day. I highly recommend watching the film before you start listening to it in the background.
The track picks are really good, when I first saw them I was like "grr how dare they not play the ones I like" but I am so glad they didn't because I can really appreciate the tracks chosen even more. I thought all of the ones picked were good before but they REALLY shine when played like this. I love them to the point where they might even ruin the originals, just that good.
Running Joke runs so well into Paper Machete, you wouldn't even think that they were from different albums or even different tracks entirely if you hadn't heard them before. There is some peaking at 4:50 that I hope is just a limitation of the film and a full release will fix. Kalopsia is sooo good like this like the use of chains adds so much, I'm surprised that this was the pick from ...Like Clockwork but I'm very happy proven wrong with it. Villains of Circumstance was a great closer in it's album and it's great here, I really like the violin on this rendition. Suture Up Your Future is one of those QOTSA tracks that I thought was just alright before and never really paid much attention but WOW is it good in this, the strings paired with the synth piano is incredible and a stand out song in the performance. It's so hard to pick a favourite track out of all of these but if I had to it might be I Never Came, it really puts a smile on my face like it's truly beautiful with that violin 3:10 into the track. The peg on the violin sounds cool even if it reminds me of the Minecraft ocean monument noise. I like Insignificant Other, a nice short closer with footsteps in the background as the credits roll.
I'm not a film nerd so I can't throw out fancy filmography terms to describe how the film part is good but I can tell that a lot of love and attention was put into place with the camera angles and the specific locations in the catacombs. It taking place there really does add so much to the experience, usually I'm not the biggest fan of over the top dripping noises but everything from the echoes and the general cave ambience really sells it. Josh Homme's general performance is amazing too, you can tell he is really feeling it, it would be a let down if you decided to make something like this a film but then didn't go all out.
