I do think if this was left as the final album it would be viewed in a better light but unfortunately having an album that is meant to have a tone of finality not be your real final album doesn't play well. Like with AMLoR if Gilmour wasn't a guitar god I don't think I would like the album that much as lyrically it just does not hit, even less than AMLoR as I do quite like some of the lyrics on that album. I don't think it's all her fault but it's very clear that the writing went downhill after Polly Samson became a writer.
I do like What Do You Want from Me but the mixing just feels off, everything is far too loud and this isn't the case for one version, as I have both the 1994 CD and the 2011 Discovery Edition CD and it can get downright painful on both.
A Great Day for Freedom just isn't it, it's the worst song on the album, completely wrong vibe and feels like it's a bonus track randomly inserted in the middle. Wearing the Inside Out and Keep Talking are the correct vibe most of the album should have gone for.
Lost for Words is just ":/", it's an alright song but it's just Gilmour complaining about Roger and that probably would have been okay and sort make sense for a final album if he didn't then do The Endless River and that Ukraine single after. Knowing that now the song comes off a bit pathetic, you can foresee the pettiness of him not allowing Roger to have the password to the Twitter account in this song. The same goes for High Hopes, would have been a great final track if it wasn't for the later album/single. It's a genuinely good track and a song that really does fit Gilmour's vocals.
Although I have complained a bunch about it I still do think it's a good album, I don't listen to it nearly as much anymore as I did in the Summer of 2019 where I had it on repeat whilst drinking cider in the sun. But It's still good enough to put on occasionally if I am in the mood for it.
